October 2017: Worship Themes


October 1, 2017: “Always A Good Day to Do Good”

Scripture:  Mark 3:1-6   Jesus heals man on a Sabbath.

Focus Verse:   “Jesus said to them, ‘Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.” (Mark 3:4)

Theme:  Jesus invites His followers to join Him in doing good each day.


October 8, 2017: “Always Growing, Always Expanding.”

Scripture:  Mark 4:26-32   The parables of the sprouting seed and of the mustard seed.

Focus Verse:  “Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.’” (Mark 4:26-7)

Theme: The kingdom of God; though often appearing small, is growing in the world.


October 15, 2017: “A Day of Miracles!”

Scripture:  Mark 5:21-43   Jesus helps the powerless and the powerful.

Focus Verse:   Jesus said, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” (Mark 5:34)

Theme:  Those trusting in Christ receive His grace regardless of their background or need.


October 22, 2017: “Now Comes the Hard Part”

Scripture: Mark 8:31-38.   Jesus predicts his suffering, death and resurrection.

Focus Verse:   Jesus said, “”If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)

Theme:  Following Jesus means embracing the cross: His and our own.


October 29, 2017: “The Kingdom of God at a Bargain Price?”

Scripture: Mark 10:17-21   A rich man seeks immortality.

Focus Verse:   Jesus said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:25)

Theme:  It is difficult for the materially blessed to understand and experience God’s kingdom.
