Children are a vital and active part of our community here are South UMC. Ongoing opportunities for children include Church School, Children's Library, and our Children's Choirs.
In addition to these ongoing ministries, we have many special events throughout the school year and summer specifically for children. Some of these events include:
Children's Day
As the culmination of our Church School year children and youth lead us in worship. We are led in music by our Children’s Choirs, prayers, readings, litanies, and the message are all led and offered by our children and youth. This is a celebration of the spiritual gifts of the young people in our Church and opportunity for them to share with the entire congregation.
Vacation Bible School
With over 100 children and 50 adult volunteers participating, this is something you don’t want to miss. You’ll enjoy Bible point crafts and exciting games, experience thrilling Bible stories, sample tasty snacks, and hear unforgettable music. Plus, you’ll meet lots of new friends! Vacation Bible School is for children who are kindergarten ready through finishing 5th grade.
Missions
Our Church School participates in several mission projects throughout the year including: Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Read to Fead Project (The Heifer Fair), and Seasonal Sharing.
Christmas Pageant
Directed by Luke Nelson, our Children’s Music Director, children and youth prepare a meaningful pageant of song, reading, and performing for our congregation.
Easter Celebration
This is a time for children to come together and celebrate and learn the meaning of Easter. We celebrate the hope of new life through Jesus Christ with crafts and an Easter egg hunt.
Second Grade Communion Celebration
Each year our 2nd grade Sunday School class spends time learning about Holy Communion. Over several weeks the children will spend class time learning about the underlying meaning of Holy Communion and why we celebrate Communion as a Sacrament.
In our United Methodist tradition, the invitation to Holy Communion belongs to the Lord and is open to all persons, including children, who respond to Christ’s love. As children are always invited to the table, this is not a 1st communion but rather a celebration and culmination of what they have learned.
Third and Eighth Grade Bible Presentation
A child’s home is the most powerful influence in their faith development. As the body of Christ, South UMC presents children and youth with the gift of their very own Bible to help support families as they nurture this most precious gift.
Third graders receive The New Adventure Bible, NIV, designed for Children age 8-12 to discover the treasure of God's Word and is filled with great adventures and exciting features.
Eighth graders receive the NRSV Student Bible. This Bible is designed for personal and small group study and loaded with guides that will help make your study of the Bible fun and easy!
Late Night Blitz
Each year during April vacation third, fourth, and fifth graders gather for an evening of fun and fellowship. This late night includes all the essentials, games, pizza, bowling, ice cream, and most importantly and opportunity to start building friendships grounded in a shared Christian faith.
